More for Kastellorizo cattle
The Kastellorizo cattle are one of the rarest and most distinctive breeds at the Farma of Rhodes. This is a native cattle population that lived in isolation for more than 80 years on Kastellorizo, a fact that makes them unique both genetically and historically.
In 2024, the last remaining animals of the population were located and transported to Rhodes in a rescue effort. Today, only 16 cows remain (11 of them are on the Farma of Rhodes), which is why the Farma of Rhodes is implementing a breeding program aimed at preserving and strengthening this rare breed.
These cows are resilient and adapted to harsh conditions, as they lived freely for many years in arid environments with limited food. They are characterized by their relatively small size, short horns, and distinctive coat colors, ranging from brown and dark brown to black or grayish.
Beyond their rarity, they are considered among the oldest forms of cattle, retaining characteristics associated with ancient populations. Their presence at the Farma of Rhodes is not only an opportunity to get to know them up close, but also part of a meaningful effort to protect our natural and agricultural heritage.
