Raccoons: Nature’s adorable “gangsters”

Raccoons are nature’s little troublemakers. These furry creatures look like they are always ready for mischief, with their cute bandit masks and black, penetrating eyes. But beyond their adorable appearance, there is a lot to know about them. Wanna dig deeper into the fascinating world of raccoons? Then keep reading to discover facts that will make you laugh and be amazed!

1. They “wear” masks for a reason!

Raccoons are famous for the black fur around their eyes, which looks just like a robber’s mask. But did you know that the dark circles reduce glare and improve their night vision, making it easier for them to scavenge? So, yes, raccoons are literally built for sneaky business.

2. Handwashing experts?

Have you ever seen a raccoon dip its food into water before eating? They do that a lot! Somebody would think they are just trying to be polite and clean their food, but the truth is funnier. These animals have super-sensitive paws with tons of nerve endings, and water helps them feel their food better!

3. They loooove trash!

Raccoons love trash -and they’ll eat just about anything! For them, a garbage bin is a delicacy and that’s why they often get busted digging through them.

4. They are very smart

Raccoons are surprisingly clever. They can open doors, undo latches, and even solve puzzles! Some scientists have even compared their problem-solving skills to those of a toddler.

5. They can “talk”

Raccoons can make over 50 different sounds, including purring, growling, and even whimpering like a puppy. Each sound has a different meaning, whether they are communicating with other raccoons or trying to tell you something.

6. They have an interesting name

The word “raccoon” comes from the Powhatan word “aroughcun,” which means “animal that scratches with its hands.” Given their love of using their paws to explore their surroundings, this name makes perfect sense.

7. They are great swimmers

Believe it or not, raccoons are excellent swimmers. They can swim for several hours if they need to. Though you are more likely to see them wading through shallow water, it’s always interesting to know they can perfectly make it in deeper waters!

8. They can live almost everywhere

Raccoons are highly adaptable, although they can mostly be found in North America -from forests and mountains to cities and suburban neighborhoods. Basically, if there’s food, they can make themselves at home everywhere!
