Ostriches are the largest birds on earth, with origins that started in Africa 60 million years ago. They have a life expectancy of 70 years and they lay about 50-100 eggs per year. It’s a very durable animal that rarely gets sick and its only weakness is claustrophobia. This is why here in Farma of Rhodes we provide adequate space for them to live as close as they can to their natural environment, be able to reproduce and communicate with other animals.
One of our greatest concerns since 2000 when we brought the first 15 ostriches in Rhodes was to respect their habits and help them live a joyful and easy life. Our visitors have the opportunity to feed them corn, interact with them and take selfies. Our facilities and way of interaction brings us about 50 newborn birds per year, thus constantly maintaining and enhancing the farm with new production.
Camel is an animal with different species originating from parts of Africa and Asia. They are very sturdy and store water to the humps on their back for draughts. Our 2 camels were both born in Africa and are admired for their size and complete calmness of movement. They are very friendly and “light up” from excitement when they are fed, especially with corn. Our visitors always try to get a perfectly timed funny facial expression of the camels when taking selfies with them!
